Best Time to Sell Gift Cards: Seasonal Rate Trends

Timing Matters for Gift Card Rates

Gift card exchange rates fluctuate throughout the year based on supply and demand cycles. Knowing when to sell can mean the difference between a good rate and a great one.

Seasonal Rate Calendar

January — HIGH DEMAND ⬆️

Post-holiday surge. Everyone received gift cards in December and wants cash. Supply is high, but demand from buyers (who received cash gifts) is also strong. Rates are typically average to slightly above average.

February-April — NORMAL

Stable period. Rates hover around the annual average. Good time to sell if you want predictable pricing.

May-June — GRADUAL RISE ⬆️

Graduation season and Father Day drive increased demand. Gaming cards (Steam, Xbox, PlayStation) often see rate bumps ahead of summer game releases.

July — STEAM SUMMER SALE PEAK 🔥

Steam Summer Sale creates massive demand for Steam gift cards. Rates for Steam can spike 5-10% above normal. Other gaming cards also benefit.

August-September — BACK TO SCHOOL ⬆️

Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy cards see increased demand for school supplies and electronics. Retail card rates improve.

October — PRE-HOLIDAY DIP ⬇️

Sellers accumulate cards ahead of holiday spending. Supply increases while demand is steady. Rates may dip slightly — hold if possible.

November — BLACK FRIDAY SURGE 🔥

Massive demand for retail and digital cards during Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales. Amazon, Apple, Walmart rates peak. Best time to sell retail cards.

December — HOLIDAY SEASON

Early December: strong demand for gift-giving. Late December: massive supply influx as people sell unwanted gifts. Sell early in December for best rates.
